Every team requires a certified Trainer. Trainers need to register with the club as an official. Registration is free.
Trainers also need to hold a valid Working With Children’s Check (WWCC) and trainer qualifications.

  • Black club trackpants, leggings or shorts

Responsibilities

Trainers:

  • Attend injured players on the ground. If any injury appears to be serious, qualified
medical assistance should be obtained immediately.
  • Are responsible for having a stretcher on the ground for each game.
  • May only enter playing surface when attending to an injured player, not as a water
    carrier.
  • Must remain in the designated fence stations or behind the boundary line against the
fence in the coach’s box while the game is in progress.

Athlete Medical Profile

Trainers should collect an Athlete Medical Profile of each player in their team. The profile should be used to ensure that any relevant medical conditions of players are known and that the trainer has access to parents’ contact information.

The Athlete Medical Profile must be kept confidential and stored securely in the trainer’s home (Coaches and Team Managers have access to emergency contact information at training and matches). At the end of the season the Athlete Medical Profile should be securely destroyed (e.g. shredded) or returned to the Team Manager for secure destruction by the club. Under no circumstances should the records be scanned and stored electronically, emailed or discarded before destruction.

Concussion Management

All trainers need to understand concussion management and take a no risk approach with players showing signs of concussion. Trainers are asked to adhere to the AFL concussion management guidelines and to administer concussion tests using the AFL Headcheck app. Players with a suspected concussion cannot return to the game or training and cannot play play for the next 12 days and must have a doctor’s clearance to return to playing.
